Meeting with Gilbert School students

Met yesterday with Gilbert School students.  Teddy, Dylan, Devon, Alex, Katie, Courtney, Allison, Kara, Jona and Bryana.  Hope I got all spellings right.  Please sign up for the site if you haven't yet.  Discussed the possibility of doing a film on budget issues in Winsted and Cyber bullying.  Then in the last few minutes the group voted unanimously to do a story on Zanna, Don't, a play that sparked a huge controversy when it was performed at a Hartford High School. Looking forward…

Occupy Wall Street

As stated by Occupy Wall Street:

“The beauty of this new formula, and what makes this novel tactic exciting, is its pragmatic simplicity: we talk to each other in various physical gatherings and virtual people’s assemblies … we zero in on what our one demand will be, a demand that awakens the imagination and, if achieved, would propel us toward the radical democracy of the future … and then we go out and seize a square of singular symbolic significance and put our asses on…

Check out videos

Check out some of the videos in the Videos section.  I was watching again Bob Elfstrom (Director of Photography) talking about the use of zoom.  Poorly shot (my fault!) but really interesting.

Had a very good meeting with East Haven High School students this past Monday.  Very interesting discussion about possible topics.  They have decided to make a film on the death penalty in the aftermath of the Cheshire home invasion.

Meeting with Common Ground today

Wonderful meeting with Common Ground students today.  They're exploring two topics: Funding cuts for the arts in school and effect of violence in the media (including video games) on young people.

Meeting G Block - HVRHS - October 26, 2011

Students gave positive feedback about the October 13th meeting.  They gained a good understanding of what the process of creating a documentary is about.  They mention the appeal of dealing with "real" people.  They understood the concept of approaching an idea or a topic with a preconceived idea and the idea that we would be looking to be surprised.

We talked about the following possible topics:

Occupy Wall Street

Uneven enforcement of rules for young people…

John Finn addresses Civic Life Project teachers

John Finn teaches government at Wesleyan University.  He kindly agreed to give us a glimpse of his great teaching for our first 2011-2102 Civic Life Project meeting. He also briefly introduced his next book "The Civic Constitution" which explores some of the very key concepts our project is based on.

Great first meeting

Had a very positive first meeting with possibly interested students at East Haven HS, on Wed Oct 5th. We met with about 10 students for about 30 mins to introduce the project, pass out signup and permissions materials and give them information for the first all state meeting. We also viewed the "overview" video and the D-Word and discussed. We have some very interested students! Excited to see everyone on the 12th @ Wesleyan! ~ JMiles, EHHS Tech Ed/Media
